The incumbent Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has emerged victorious in the 2024 governorship election, securing a commanding lead in all 18 local government areas of the state.
Representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aiyedatiwa defeated his closest rival, Mr. Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with a decisive margin.
Aiyedatiwa polled a total of 366,781 votes, while Ajayi managed 117,835 votes. This result not only underscores the APC’s dominance in the state but also highlights Aiyedatiwa’s widespread acceptance among voters.
In Akure South, one of the largest local government areas, Aiyedatiwa garnered 32,969 votes, outpacing Ajayi’s 17,926 votes. Similarly, in Okitipupa, a critical battleground, the APC candidate secured 26,811 votes, compared to the PDP’s 10,233 votes.
Other notable results include:
Akoko Northeast: APC – 25,657; PDP – 5,072
Akoko Northwest: APC – 25,010; PDP – 5,502
Akure North: APC – 14,451; PDP – 5,787
Political analysts attribute Aiyedatiwa’s success to his administration’s developmental strides, including infrastructure improvements, economic empowerment programs, and robust health initiatives during his first term.
In his victory speech, Aiyedatiwa extended an olive branch to the opposition and pledged to prioritise unity and development in his second term. “This victory is for all Ondo State citizens,” he said.
“Together, we will continue building the future we deserve.”
Meanwhile, the PDP candidate, Agboola Ajayi, has yet to release a statement regarding the election results.
