The Edo State Ministry of Education has announced a comprehensive package of reforms set to take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session. These measures are designed to enhance quality, stability, and practical learning outcomes across all schools in the state.

Textbook Reuse Policy

Under the new directive, all government-approved textbooks will remain in circulation for a minimum of four years before any review. This will allow younger siblings to reuse books already purchased by older ones, significantly reducing financial pressure on parents while promoting consistency in teaching and learning.

Graduation Ceremonies

Henceforth, graduation ceremonies will be strictly limited to pupils completing:

Basic Education (Primary 1 – JSS 3), and

Senior Secondary 3 (SSS 3).

Even at these levels, only modest school-based celebrations will be permitted. Prom-style parties are expressly prohibited, while graduation ceremonies for nursery/kindergarten and Primary 6 pupils have been suspended.

Mandatory Entrepreneurship Skills Training for JSS 3

A key highlight of the reforms is the introduction of compulsory entrepreneurship and vocational training for all JSS 3 students. Upon completion, each student will receive:

  1. The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) certificate, and
  2. A Skills Acquisition Certificate in their chosen trade subject.

The Ministry emphasized that this initiative will ensure that Edo students graduate not only with strong academic foundations but also with practical, marketable skills vital for self-reliance and long-term success.

A Bold Step Towards Educational Transformation

Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo has been commended for his bold and visionary leadership in approving these far-reaching reforms. By cutting down costs for parents, curbing unnecessary extravagance in schools, and embedding entrepreneurship training at the basic education level, the Governor has set Edo State on a historic path toward producing globally competitive, innovative, and self-sufficient graduates.

This policy underscores the government’s commitment to placing education at the heart of Edo’s development agenda. However, stakeholders note that its ultimate success will depend on effective implementation, adequate funding, and sustained engagement with parents, teachers, and school proprietors.

Education remains the strongest legacy any leader can bequeath — and this landmark reform signals Edo’s determination to build a generation of problem-solvers and innovators ready to drive the state’s growth in the years ahead.
